IPATH Pop-Up Workshop
Linking the Research Question to Research Methods Workshop
In alignment with IPATH's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that nurtures academic growth, the workshop will focus on equipping attendees with the tools and knowledge necessary to refine their research capabilities and navigate the landscape of academic publishing.
“Science is characterized by a unified methodology rather than disparate subject matters. This methodology is grounded in a set of principles designed to foster clear communication, logical reasoning, and collaborative consensus. At its core, scientific methodology necessitates explicit, public, and accessible procedures, which allow for replication and critique—essential components of the scientific process. It also establishes rules for logical and valid reasoning, enabling researchers to derive reliable conclusions from empirical observations. Furthermore, it promotes intersubjectivity by facilitating the sharing of data and observations among scientists, which is crucial for reaching a consensus.”
Research methods are the systematic strategies, processes, or techniques utilized to collect data and evidence. These methods are fundamental to the discovery of new information and the deepening of our understanding of various topics. During this workshop, our focus will be on the articulation of research questions and the strategic linking of these questions to suitable research methods. We will explore how to frame questions that guide inquiry and select methodologies that best address the intricacies of the subject at hand.

The workshop is intended to encourage students to formulate precise research questions and connect them with effective research methodologies. The aim is to guide participants on HOW to craft well-defined questions and select the most appropriate methods to investigate complex topics thoroughly.
Part One: Crafting Effective Research Questions Introduction to the importance of well-formulated research questions. An interactive segment will follow, utilizing abstracts received to showcase potential enhancements. Part Two: Diverse Research Methods Presentation of experimental research design, emphasizing concepts of internal and external validity. Exploration of cross-sectional and quasi-experimental designs, along with case study approaches. An interactive dialogue based on student-submitted examples will conclude this segment. |

The Research Methods portion of the workshop will be led by Lin Lin, PhD, IPATH Board of Directors, along with a dedicated team of researchers and practitioners.
Lin Lin, PhD
Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University
Senior Lecturer, Department of Urban Planning & Design
Suzhou, Jiangsu, China PRC
Lin received her doctoral. in urban design and planning from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Before she joined Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University, Lin was an assistant professor at School of Ecological and Environmental Sciences at East China Normal University. Her research interests focus on conceptualizing and understanding the reciprocal relationship between the built environment‚ human behaviors‚ and public health. Lin believes this relationship underpins the development of genuinely healthy and sustainable communities.
